No, despite the name, we’re not a Hotel! Hotel Elephant is a not-for-profit company established in 2009 to provide space for Arts, Culture & Creative Enterprise in Southwark. Hotel Elephant started life as our co-founder, Reuben’s studio and education space. The name, Hotel Elephant, was the title of an exhibition of large-scale drawings of the Elephant & Castle demolition sites. The name was inspired by a set of large red neon letters from the top of the old London Park Hotel, one of the demolition sites Reuben had been drawing. Reuben had been given some of these letters, which were featured as part of the exhibition and have formed part of our signage ever since. Some of the letters can be seen illuminated at the front of our arches on Spare Street.

We named Spare Street after Austin Osman Spare, who was an Edwardian portrait artist who lived and exhibited locally until he died in 1956. His work was influenced by symbolism and art nouveau, his work is known for its strong composition and line. His subject matter often includes portraiture and allegorical landscapes that allude to classical mythology.
We opened Spare street in July 2016 as the first permanent Creative Enterprise hub in the Elephant & Castle! Since then we have provided a total of 8,750 sqft of workspace including a public space & cafe across five renovated railway arches.

Here at Hotel Elephant, we are a small but enthusiastic team! The company is run by its founders and directors, Reuben and Emily. Reuben is an artist whose work is primarily drawing and painting, most recently focusing on the theme of boats and the sea. Emily also has an arts background study Drawing at Camberwell College of Arts and started working at Hotel Elephant organizing exhibitions and assisting with teaching projects whilst at university. Alongside working on the longer-term strategy and exciting future plans, Reuben and Emily can often be seen around our workspace buildings conducting tours and chatting with members.
Our directors are supported by Judie who runs the office, prepares paperwork and invoices, liaising with our members, and generally being an indispensable superstar! Our social media manager Louise, helps to create and schedule our content writing blog posts and newsletters to keep everyone up to date with our activities.
And we can’t talk about our team without mentioning our colleagues at Sidecar Coffee Bar. A talented team of baristas and tasty toastie makers, fuelling our working day and lifting our spirits on those cold grey days. Thank you for all the coffee we couldn’t do it without you!

However, most of our members will be able to apply for business rates relief through the council. We have put together a useful blog post which steps you through the process.

Our SE17 spaces are situated on Spare Street and Larcom Street, both off Walworth Road. We are a short walk from the leafy Elephant Park which offers a great green space for those sunny days and some excellent restaurants and cafes for lunches. We are also a 12-minute walk from the Southwark Playhouse Borough which has always had a range of shows to see. Mercato Metropolitano is an Italian food market 10 minutes walk away it offers a range of food options and is a great spot to grab a drink after work. Finally, our very own Sidecar Coffee bar is located next door to our studio and coworking space on Spare Street where you can get the very best coffee in London (at least we think so!).
Studio Space
-
We have a broad remit to provide studio spaces for people working within the arts and creative industries. This includes fine artists and makers, as well as people working in the design and digital creative industries. Our members include painters, costume designers, photographers, filmmakers, jewellery designers, animators and ceramicists.
We understand that creative practices can be varied and would always encourage potential studio members to send us an enquiry to let us know what your requirements are. We’re always happy to help!
-
Whilst we would always encourage everyone to send us an enquiry about your requirements, there are a few things we generally do not accept; This includes musicians and those looking to set up music studios, mainly due to the potential noise disturbance to other studios. However, this is something we may look at accommodating in the future.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept hot work and very toxic processes. We also do not accept business outside of the creative industries in our studio spaces, such as hair and beauty services, therapists, yoga and sports training studios. We love all of these types of services however our studios are just not suitable for them.
-
We have different contract options available, including those with one-month and three-month break options. At some locations, we also offer contracts with greater security. Please refer to individual space listings and speak with our team.
If you're looking for something even more flexible, we also offer day passes for desk space in our coworking space, these are just £22 + VAT per day. No contracts, just pay as you go! If you're looking to host a team of people our meeting space is available to hire on an hourly or daily basis and, depending on availability we can also make offices available to hire by the day.
-
We do not currently offer spaces to people looking to set up music recording studios. This is because of the potential for the noise to disturb other studio members. If you work with sound as part of your creative practice, at low volumes or through headphones this would be considered and we would be happy to discuss this with you.
-
Yes, a small number of our studios are suitable for installing a kiln. These are currently located on the ground floor of our Newington Causeway SE1 building. All kiln usage needs to be separately metered and the electricity usage needs to be paid in addition to the service charge for the studio. You would be required to have the correct insurance for operating this equipment. No kilns or other similar equipment can be installed and operated in any of our spaces without prior approval from the Hotel Elephant team. We are happy to help, please send us an enquiry.
-
Yes, we are ‘dog friendly’! As long as your furry pal is well-behaved you are welcome to bring your dog to work. Please be aware that not everyone likes dogs, so please keep your dog under control at all times.
-
Wifi, utilities and cleaning of communal areas are included in the service charge for your studio. The service charge may differ at different locations and may change depending on usage, for example, increased electricity usage or price increases.
-
All our spaces are required to be returned in the same or better condition as they were provided. You are not permitted to make any alterations to the space, however, you are welcome to repaint the walls white. If you would like to do any further work to your space, please get in contact with us first - we understand that making improvements to your space may help you create your desired working environment and we are happy to advise on what would be acceptable. It is always worth keeping in mind that you will have to ‘make good’ when you leave the studio.
-
We do not provide regular or daily parking but loading and unloading are available at all our locations. At Spare Street, there is a bollard that can be lowered to allow for loading outside the studios. At Harper Road and Newington Causeway, vehicle access via the main gate can be arranged. Please send a request in advance and we can advise if someone is available to do this.
-
No, we do not provide live/workspace. Living or overnighting in your studio is not permitted and is a serious breach of the terms of your studio agreement.
-
Communal areas are cleaned weekly. Studio members are responsible for keeping their studios clean and tidy. We ask all members to clean up after themselves after using communal facilities to ensure they are in good condition for others to use. All members are required to store items in their studios only. Communal areas and corridors should be kept clear of items and rubbish for safety reasons. General waste and recycling bins are provided.
-
No, currently we do not provide any communal equipment. Our studio spaces come empty for our members to set up as they wish. However, some of our studio members may have equipment or services that they offer or make accessible to others.
If you are a current member with equipment or service to offer, do let us know and we can add you to our member's directory.
-
Our studio spaces are occupied by a diverse range of creatives. We are often able to find a space for most creative practices. If you'd like to get a better idea of the work our members do then we recommend you visit our members directory. You can connect and view some of our members’ work, it’s also a great space to get inspired.
