Finding affordable artist studio space in London can be challenging, particularly for artists and makers looking for flexible and supportive working environments. At Hotel Elephant, we provide affordable studios for artists, makers and creative practitioners in Elephant & Castle, central London.
Our studio community is based across two locations in SE17 — Spare Street Studios and St John’s Walworth Studios — both just a short walk from Elephant & Castle Station. Together, these spaces support a wide range of creative practices, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, photography, design and digital work, as well as small creative businesses running workshops or training activities.
Unlike many studio providers, our spaces are not ‘meanwhile use’. This means our focus is on providing stable, longer-term studio locations where members can establish and grow their practice without the risk of sudden relocation. It also allows us to invest in infrastructure and services, such as leased-line fibre internet, which are increasingly essential for today’s creative professionals.

Spare Street Studios
Our Spare Street Studios are located in a series of refurbished railway arches just a 3-minute walk from Elephant & Castle station. The studios are well-suited to artists and makers working in a variety of disciplines, including ‘quiet & clean’ and ‘noisy & messy’ work.
These studios would suit painters, sculptors, designers or other creative practitioners looking for an affordable central London workspace.

St John’s Walworth Studios
St John’s Walworth Studios are based in a peaceful former school building just a short walk from Elephant & Castle station. Here, we offer studio sizes ranging from 100 to 600 sq ft, ideal for individual artists and larger creative companies or groups.

About Our Studio Locations
Hotel Elephant is a not-for-profit creative workspace provider with two studio locations in Elephant & Castle, London.
Spare Street Studios
In July 2016, Hotel Elephant launched Spare Street - a "new street" dedicated to Creative Enterprise in Elephant & Castle, London. Spare Street is made up of five newly refurbished, glazed-fronted railway arches. Providing 27 studio spaces for recent graduates and local creatives.
Spare Street is a permanent creative enterprise hub in the Elephant & Castle. Here, we deliver on our mission to provide and safeguard long-term space for the creative industries in London.
St John’s Walworth Studios
A peaceful former school building, St John’s Walworth, opened in the Summer of 2022 and provides workspaces for artists, makers, and small creative businesses. At this location we have 900 sqft project space, located in the former school hall, the project space is available for members and non-members to hire for various arts, education, and community activities. This is also where we host our Saturday Club for teenagers.
