Spotlight: Hotel Elephant St Johns

St John’s Walworth is situated in a former primary school and offers workspaces for artists, makers, and small creative businesses. This new addition to London's creative workspace landscape provides secure, high-quality spaces for five years. All workspaces are equipped with lots of natural light, heating, wifi, and access to communal facilities such as kitchens, wash-out sinks, and bookable project space for members. It is also Hotel Elephant's ambition that all workspace members provide an element of educational or community benefit as part of their tenancy, and the organization will support these activities through the use of the project space and by connecting members with wider local networks.

Project Space

The project space, located in the former school hall, will be available for a range of arts, education, and community activities. Our project space, located in the hall space of our new St Johns Walworth building, is a versatile area available for both our members and non-members to use. Since opening, we have hosted a number of student exhibitions from the University of Arts London, life drawing classes, and workshops.

The 900 sqft space was formerly used as an assembly hall for the school and can accommodate up to 160 people standing, depending on the nature of the event. Equipped with a projector and screen, along with some basic furniture, this space is ideal for exhibitions, talks, workshops, photo shoots, and community events.

150 years of history

St John's Walworth building boasts stunning Victorian architecture. As a former primary school, it is over 150 years old and has been thoughtfully transformed to provide a contemporary creative workspace while preserving its unique heritage.

Built in 1866 the building showcases some beautiful examples of gothic Victorian architecture, from the high ceilings and large windows that flood the space with natural light, to the original brickwork and ornate detailing that imbues the space with character and charm. This combination of old and new creates a unique and inspiring atmosphere that is perfect for artists, makers, and small creative businesses. Whether you are looking for a traditional or modern workspace, the St John's Walworth building has something to offer to everyone who is passionate about creativity and innovation.

Building a Creative Community

One of the key advantages of our St John's Walworth building is the diversity of studio spaces available. We offer a range of studios, from smaller spaces suitable for individual artists and freelancers to larger studios for small businesses or group collaborations. This variety of spaces has helped us to build a micro-community of creatives within our wider Hotel Elephant community. Our members are able to choose the space that best suits their needs and are able to customize it to fit their specific requirements. Whether you need a quiet space for focused work or a bustling studio that inspires collaboration and creativity, we have a studio that will work for you. Our studio spaces are secure for five years, providing our members with the stability they need to grow their businesses or practices. We believe that a supportive and diverse workspace is key to nurturing creativity and innovation, and we are proud to be able to offer this to our members at St John's Walworth.

St John's Walworth is an exciting new creative hub that offers diverse and high-quality studio spaces for a range of creative industries. Our members are part of a supportive and inspiring community that encourages collaboration and innovation, and our project space provides an excellent venue for events and exhibitions. We invite you to become a part of our community and join us in this exciting new chapter for Hotel Elephant.
