Based in her London studio, Mairi Gillies has been honing her skills in woven and constructed textiles for the past several years. Originally getting into textiles at a young age, it was during her BA Hons degree in woven textile design at Central Saint Martins where she found her love for weaving. Keeping sustainable practices at the heart of everything she does, Mairi utilises secondhand and donated materials within her weaving. Working with the ethos of ‘not needing to buy new to create new’, Mairi produces textiles of bold colour and texture which convey experimental play and communicative storytelling through woven material. She is inspired by the atmosphere created within different locations and environments. Whether it’s the surrealist scale of a childhood memory or the tranquillity of an early morning swim, capturing the mood of these moments within the textiles she produces is her passion. Mairi is also a member of the Association of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers.

Next month Mairi will have her work featured in ELLE UK as a part of the ELLE x Fashion Cross, so if you’d like to follow Mairi’s work follow her @wovenmairi or if you’re interested in purchasing her work visit her website.

Mairi also frequently runs weaving workshops for anyone from beginner to pros weavers, check out her workshops to book yourself a place.
